When people look for new wheels they generally always think ‘car’ first. This is fine for families and those who travel hundreds of miles per week but if you’re one of the lucky people who live close to work, close to the shops and close to friends and relatives then why not consider a scooter instead of a car?
Why would I want a scooter you may ask? Well read on to find out why…
Reason 1: scooters are incredibly economical
The majority of 50cc scooters do between 110 and 140mpg – a fact which makes them one of the top modes of transport for fuel economy. Obviously larger scooters do fewer miles per gallon (a 250cc scooter will manage 70-90mpg) but even so they are still much more economical than the small cars currently on the market.
In addition to the low fuel expenses, scooters are often cheap to tax. We say often because the actual tax you pay depends on the size of the scooter, but for 50cc-150cc scooters you only pay £15 per year. This price increases to £40 for 150-250cc scooters and £65 for anything over 250cc. So, a small scooter suitable for commuting to work and social gatherings will save you enough money in tax per year to fill it with petrol for months on end!
Reason 2: scooters are cheap to insure when compared to cars
This fact is especially true with regards to youngsters. For example, a 19 year old scooter rider (50-100cc) will pay around £250-300 per year fully comprehensive. How may 19 year olds could get the same deal when trying to insure their first car? Even experienced drivers can save money on insurance, and those who are 40+ can often insure their scooter for less than £50 per year.
Reason 3: scooters are perfect for congested areas
If you have to travel to work during the rush hour, or you live in a major city where it’s always busy then a scooter is far more practical than a car. Scooters can nip in between the traffic and get you to your destination far quicker than even the smallest car. You do need confidence to do this however, and a good grasp of the road rules.
Reason 4: you can get yourself on the road with just your CBT
Every scooter, moped or motorbike rider has to have a provisional licence and a pass with regards to the Compulsory Basic Training. They don’t however need to take a driving test straight away and so they can literally be riding around on the roads within minutes of completing their CBT. The minimum age requirement is 16 (rather than 17 for a car) which means youngsters can get mobile and independent that little bit sooner.
Reason 5: scooters are once again fashionable
In the 60s and 70s scooters were all the rage however since then, and until quite recently, they tended to be seen as a method of transport for those who couldn’t afford a car! Today the scooter is once again popular, partly because of its economical nature and partly because of its eco-friendliness. Even the celebrities are turning to scooters and it isn’t uncommon to see Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Pete Townsend and even car-loving Jay Kay out on theirs.
So, in simple terms scooters are cheap to run, cheap to tax, cheap to insure, environmentally friendly, helpful when it comes to traffic congestion and really quite trendy. The only question left to answer therefore is why you would possibly want anything else?
